Access Chapter 2 (AC2) expresses profound concern regarding developments in the murder case of Honor Mhlaba, a self-affirming gay man who tragically lost his life on 4 June 2024. Honor was allegedly murdered by his partner during a heated argument, resulting in him being pushed from the 7th floor of a building. The case has been postponed until 30 January 2025, citing delays in evidence collection .
This postponement has allowed the defense to request either the removal of the case from the roll or the granting of bail to the accused. These developments delay justice for Honor and risk setting a dangerous precedent for cases involving violence against members of the LGBTI+ community. AC2 calls upon the justice system to act with urgency and transparency in this matter. Swift and decisive legal actions are crucial not only to honor Honor’s memory but to reaffirm the commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of the LGBTI+ community.
Access Chapter 2 urges the public to unite in solidarity and attend the upcoming hearing on 30 January 2025. By showing a strong presence, we can collectively demand justice for Honor and emphasize that acts of violence targeting the LGBTI+ community will not go unnoticed or unchallenged. To ensure sustained advocacy and action, AC2 encourages participation in community meetings, rallies, and advocacy efforts. Together, we can amplify our voices and send a powerful message to lawmakers and decision-makers, signaling our resilience and commitment to justice and equality.
This case is a painful reminder of the broader challenges faced by the LGBTI+ community. It is not merely a legal matter but a fight for acceptance, equality, and the right to live free from violence and discrimination. AC2 remains committed to supporting the victim’s family, advocating for systemic change, and ensuring that perpetrators of violence are held accountable. The path to justice for Honor Mhlaba is far from over. Let us stand united, not just for Honor but for all members of the LGBTI+ community who face violence and discrimination. Together, we can demonstrate the power of solidarity and work toward a just and equitable society where no one is left behind.
