Press Release: Namibian High Court decriminalises the Sodomy law

2024/06/23

Access Chapter 2 welcomes the landmark ruling handed down by the High Court of Namibia declaring the sodomy law unconstitutional and invalid. This decision is a significant step towards promoting equality and human rights in Namibia. The Sodomy law has been used as a tool for discrimination and persecution against individuals based on their sexual orientation. This ruling sends a clear message that all individuals are equal before the law, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Access Chapter 2 commends the Namibian High Court for upholding the principles of equality and non-discrimination enshrined in the Namibian Constitution. This ruling is a victory for human rights and a step towards creating a more inclusive and tolerant society in Namibia.

AC2 Executive Director Steve Letsike “Activists across the world continue to shake off the shackles of the past oppressions and in their determined struggle against colonial laws striving for a just society, this continues to help earn a place in the sun of new rule of law enforcement. Namibia now joins many countries that the courts rules in favour of dignity and integrity for all. We are delighted that it happened now than later. A just society is possible.  Congratulations to the team and activists in Namibia.”

AC2  calls on the Namibian government to respect and uphold the ruling of the High Court and to take further steps to promote and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation. Discriminatory laws have no place in a democratic and progressive society.
